Singing Churchmen Concert

Singing Churchmen Concert

Tue, March 23, 2010 7:00 PM

The Singing Churchmen (SCM) of Oklahoma is one of the performing groups sponsored in part by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO).  The group, begun in the Fall of 1960 by founding director, Gene Bartlett, now number over 300 active members. James D. Woodward took over the director role in the early years and led the group to great musical experiences for almost 30 years.  The phenomenal numerical growth and statewide popularity of the group are due in large part to the leadership and vision of Dr. Bill Green who directed the group from 1991 (following Woodward’s death) until 2009.   The group is now under the leadership of first year director, Dr. Ken Gabrielse, who serves as the Worship and Music Specialist for the BGCO.

The SCM has presented the musical gospel in many different states and around the world.  They have been on ministry trips to Japan, Russia, East Asia, Australia, and most recently, Armenia.  Wherever they sing, their concerts are characterized by great attention to musical detail and the passionate singing of their love for Jesus Christ.  Their ministry in song is infectious.

These men represent music ministries of Southern Baptist Churches from all around our great state.  Most of the men are presently active in leading churches in music and worship every week.  Usually, the membership presents one concert each month during the October-May concert season.  The full group concerts are offered with a choir of 200 men and a 60 member wind ensemble.  However, once or twice every season, they divide into smaller groups to present their music in churches that may not be able to host the full group.

Memorial Baptist Church will host a split group of the Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma in concert on March 23.  The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m.  The concert repertoire includes traditional anthems, hymn arrangements, original songs commissioned for the group – there will be something for everyone.  There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome to attend this concert sponsored by Memorial Baptist Church, 2800 South Yale Avenue. Nursery for ages 0-3 will be provided; older children are welcome to listen to the concert.
